Position Summary
The Consultant Psychiatrist (Prenatal / Perinatal Mental Health) provides specialist psychiatric care to women during pre‑conception, pregnancy, and the postpartum period. The role focuses on assessment, diagnosis, and management of mental health conditions unique to or exacerbated during the perinatal period. The consultant works closely with obstetrics, maternal‑fetal medicine, neonatology, psychology, and midwifery teams to deliver safe, evidence‑based, family‑centred care aligned with DHA regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive psychiatric assessment and management for women pre‑pregnancy, during pregnancy, and postpartum
- Diagnose and treat perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, including depression, bipolar disorder, OCD, PTSD, and psychosis
- Manage complex cases involving psychotropic medication use during pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Conduct risk assessments, crisis intervention, and safety planning for high‑risk mothers
- Support patients with pre‑existing psychiatric conditions transitioning into pregnancy
- Collaborate with obstetrics, maternal‑fetal medicine, neonatology, psychology, and midwifery teams
- Participate in multidisciplinary case conferences and joint perinatal clinics
- Provide counselling on reproductive planning, medication adjustments, and mental health optimization
- Oversee inpatient and outpatient perinatal psychiatric services
- Ensure compliance with perinatal mental health guidelines and hospital protocols
- Participate in clinical audits, quality‑improvement initiatives, and morbidity/mortality reviews
- Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation aligned with DHA standards
- Teach and supervise residents, psychologists, nurses, and allied health staff
- Lead training sessions on perinatal mental health and early detection of psychiatric conditions
- Engage in research, publications, and evidence‑based practice in perinatal psychiatry
Qualifications & Requirements
- Medical degree (MBBS/MD or equivalent)
- Completed residency in Psychiatry with subspecialty training or strong experience in Perinatal / Prenatal Psychiatry
- Board Certification (e.g., American Board, Royal College, Arab Board, or equivalent)
- Eligibility for Consultant licensure with Dubai Health Authority (DHA)
- Minimum 3–5 years post‑consultant experience preferred
- Expertise in psychopharmacology during pregnancy and lactation
- Strong communication, counselling, and multidisciplinary teamwork skills
- Experience in women’s mental health, tertiary care, or high‑risk obstetric settings is an advantage
