A note for recruiters - I'm afraid we have a preferred suppliers list and aren't currently looking for new recruitment partners.

UI / UX Developer

The UI/UX Developer is a technology-focussed role that seeks to provide end users with a fantastic experience when interacting with our products.

You’ll see the creation of user workflows and wireframes as the first step in the coding journey, using research to steer and validate your work. You’ll sit between creative and development teams, but will be comfortable in both worlds, providing valuable contributions and insight. You don’t need to be a ‘jack of all trades’ but you do need to be a master of your chosen specialism. As well as working on new projects, you’ll also work with our retained clients to improve the UX of their existing digital assets.

Summary

  • Salary: Dependant on talent, skills and experience. Bliss use a salary banding system to encourage fairness and transparency.
  • Start date: TBC
  • Location: Full-time office working is not required, but occasional collaboration in our Manchester office is preferred. See ‘Remote Working’ below for more information.
  • Hours: 5 days per week is preferred, but part time applications are welcome. Bliss operates a flexible working policy.
  • Ideal experience: We’re looking for someone that can demonstrate commercial experience, probably at a middleweight level (but we’re happy to be convinced otherwise). We’ll also be looking for someone that’s worked in digital before, ideally at a digital agency.

Who are Bliss?

Bliss is a digital agency that provides strategic creative and technical solutions for local, national and international organisations. We have an office in Manchester city centre, but are generally working at home due to Covid - we want the best of both worlds in the future.

We’re friendly, collaborative and fair, and require all team members to embody these core values.

Bliss is a sustainable business that wants to contribute more than we take. Our work in the humanitarian, charity and nonprofit sectors reflects our values, and we are looking to expand this in 2021 and beyond. We are an accredited employer of the Living Wage Foundation, and are working toward B Corp certification.

Quality is very important to us, and we are constantly striving to improve our skills, knowledge and working practices. Where we don’t think we’re able to be great, we’ll look to partners who are.

We are a self motivated group of web developers, passionate about technology. We pride ourselves in our ability to empathise with our clients on problems and thrive for creative solutions that create maximum value.

If this sounds like the sort of agency you’d like to work for, we’d love to hear from you!

Our values

At Bliss, personal values are as important as experience and skills. If you’re not a good fit for our agency, you won’t enjoy your job, and that’s not good for anyone.

Be Good

We believe in looking after each other, the planet and its inhabitants. We don’t want you to be selfless, but we do expect you to do the right thing above all else.

Be Friendly

Open yourself up to your colleagues and clients and they’ll do the same for you. In this way you’ll create friendships from work relationships, gaining trust, respect and support.

Be Harmonious

We’re a team, and work to the same goals even when we might not agree individually. You’ll be the sort of person that gets as much out of collective success as you do from personal victories.

Skills and Responsibilities

You probably need these skills to be great at this job

  • Identify user journeys from a client brief and your own research.
  • Design storyboards and/or wireframes to conceptualise designs.
  • Prototype user interfaces on paper and in tools like Invision.
  • Validate the success of your work using data, surveys and other methods.
  • Be able to implement semantic and accessible HTML.
  • Collaborate well with clients, creative and development teams.
  • Solid grasp of modern CSS and expert knowledge of CSS fundamentals. You should know when to flex or grid and have a engrained understanding of the cascade and selector specificity.
  • Understand the basics of git version control and how to use it within a team.
  • High quality control from the beginning to the end of a project. We’re not pixel scrutinisers but your output should be well tested and something you’d be happy to put your name on.

Having experience with these skills would be a benefit

  • Natural creative skills.
  • Understanding of modern JavaScript but not afraid to get dirty with jQuery.
  • Knowledge of CSS preprocessors such as Sass/SCSS/LESS.
  • Implemented CSS methodologies such as BEM, Cube and OOCSS.
  • Experience using build tools such as Gulp, Grunt or webpack etc.
  • Developed using JavaScript frameworks such as Vue, React, Angular etc.
  • Developed within a PHP based CMS such as Drupal or Wordpress.
  • CMS experience of any kind.
  • Knowledge of static site generators such as Eleventy, Hugo or Jekyll.
  • Experience using design tools such as Sketch, Figma or Adobe XD.
  • Happy to engage in discussions about development process improvements and suggest new technologies.

Remote working?

We’ve always believed in being flexible, and are currently  planning to move from an office-first to a remote-first model. We believe that both working together face-to-face and working from home have benefits, and will provide the best of both worlds to our team.

Full-time remote workers may be considered for some roles, as long as they have a UK working visa.
