POSITION SUMMARY:
The Emergency Department Safety Specialist role will promote safe care for emergency patients by keeping patient safety as a focus of all operations and clinical practices. This individual will be the unit safety champion and will effectively develop and execute patient centered safety initiatives.
The Emergency Department Safety Specialist will work collaboratively with the leadership team, staff members and Quality and Patient Safety department to ensure patient safety. This position will have an acute understanding of provider and system needs in the complex setting of an academic medical center. In collaboration with leadership, be responsible for coordinating and providing interdisciplinary safety programs.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
Culture of Safety
Promotes a just: non punitive patient safety culture Utilizes hospital's values as the basis for decision making and to facilitate the division’s hospital mission
Proactive Risk Identification, Assessment and Mitigation
Participates in patient safety or administrative walking rounds and is a resource to promote adherence to standards Presents patient and staff safety concerns to appropriate clinical forums Makes recommendations for future quality and safety projects Assesses the documentation of EHRs and provides feedback to clinicians Maintains database of records reviewed, issues identified, and plans of correction
Event Analysis and Reporting
Reviews emergency management incidents daily and investigates and if needed disseminates to appropriate provider or forum for review Encourages staff to identify and report adverse events, near misses and monitors for trends Performs collaborative reviews of adverse occurrences and near misses and incorporates findings into education multidisciplinary educational opportunities Participates in and contributes to departmental performance and perinatal quality review activities Conducts investigatory interviews, debriefing for near miss and unexpected quality events with team as directed by departmental leadership Supports the healthcare team with disclosure when an adverse event or untoward outcome occurs Presents cases, quality review investigation and outcomes at Patient Safety Steering Committee. If reportable, then prepares report for submission to DPH/BORIM or required regulatory body Participates onsite reviews by regulatory agencies Facilitates departmental root cause analysis
Education
Keeps abreast of changing national standards of clinical practice and safety science literature. Disseminates pertinent safety and specialty related information to the team Provides regular patient safety and loss prevention educational programs for staff Collaborates with nursing education and departmental leadership with facilitation of clinical drills for high risk situations and fosters multidisciplinary participation Co-chairs the Teams Training program Performs other duties as needed
