SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Laboratory Services Manager, conducts a variety of laboratory procedures for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease. Evaluates new procedures. Performs testing on automated and manual procedures. Problem solves; performs QC/QA as needed; performs phlebotomy; and other duties as assigned. Trains students from a variety of universities/colleges during their clinical rotations to include training in but not limited to specimen receipt, specimen processing, QC/QA procedures, trouble-shooting instrument/sample problems and resulting in the LIS.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS
- Equivalent to a Bachelors Degree with specialized training in Medical Technology or directly related field.
- Must be certified as a MT by ASCP, NCA, HEW, or State License Board and maintains certification while employed.
- Requires a minimum of one year of clinical experience to qualify for the certification examination.
- Requires up to three months to become proficient in specific laboratory test procedures performed

- Basic computer skills.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Obtains acceptable laboratory specimens and documents required information using appropriate techniques in a timely manner.
- Prepares, processes, labels, distributes, and documents specimens according to department standards in a timely manner.?
- Performs laboratory analysis and ensures the distribution of associated test information and results in a manner consistent with department standards, regulatory standards, and turnaround time criteria.
- Evaluates the validity of the entire testing process and takes appropriate corrective action if necessary.
- Performs order entry, specimen collection, results entry, and report query functions within the laboratory information system.
- Ensures the proper functioning of laboratory instrumentation and methods through the performance of maintenance and troubleshooting procedures. Demonstrates personal competency by successful performance of proficiency surveys and the annual department competency program.
- Ensures effective communication with physicians, hospital staff, and management.
- Performs QC/QA as needed to perform job duties.
- Attends all mandatory meetings and is familiar with Laboratory Compliance and HIPAA regulations.
- Documents in the LIS in detail any issues that have occurred with the patient specimen.
- Documents all called critical results accurately in the LIS. Documents all delta checks accurately in the LIS.
- Exhibits organizational skills that support the operational objectives of the department.
- Actively seeks opportunities and participates in the development of new laboratory methods, processes, and special projects.
- Acts as a resource person for educational, critical, or problem prone situations.
- Performs job responsibilities in a manner consistent with the customer service goals and objectives of the department and hospital.
- Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on the physical, psycho/social, educational, safety and related patient needs appropriate to the age of the patient served.
