JOB DESCRIPTION
The Director NPCU leadership and support to the Chief Nursing Officer who is responsible for all nursing and other designated patient care functions/services within the hospital organization.
The Director is accountable to support the CNO to ensure high quality, safe and appropriate nursing care, competency of clinical staff, and appropriate resource management related to patient care. This leader will assume responsibility for assisting in assessing, planning, coordinating, implementing and evaluating nursing practice on unit level. Direct, supervise and evaluate work activities of all nursing personnel. Provide clinical leadership, strategic and long term goals for the nursing staff. Determine, assign and assess performance objectives for nursing department. Organize, coordinate, develop and review policies, procedures and nursing protocols to meet all regulatory, compliance and quality care standards. Responsible for the quality of care, operational and financial efficiency of the nursing unit. Lead and develop the nursing staff within the unit, providing performance goals, feedback and development opportunities. Develop and oversee function/departmental budget and reporting. Direct and conduct recruitment, hiring and training of personnel. Chair committees as assigned.
Essential Functions
- Develops and implements departmental goals, plans, and standards consistent with the clinical, administrative, legal, and ethical requirements/objectives of the organization.
- Directs and evaluates departmental operations, including patient care delivery, information technologies, service level determination, and complaint management, to achieve performance and quality control objectives.
- Plans and monitors staffing activities, including hiring, orienting, evaluating, disciplinary actions, and continuing education initiatives.
- Prepares, monitors, and evaluates departmental budgets, and ensures that the department operates in compliance with allocated funding. Coordinates and directs internal/external audits.
- Creates and fosters an environment that encourages professional growth. Integrates evidence-based practices into operations and clinical protocols.
- Participates in TJC preparation activities and strives to assure all TJC standards and other requirements are met.
- Attends meetings as required. Assures appropriate referrals are made to Case Management, Rehab, Dietary, Respiratory, etc.
- Upon discharge, ensures accurate entry of discharge disposition/level of care in Cerner.
- Records minutes and attendance from staff meetings. Includes QI results. Minutes are made available for staff to review.
- Has a mechanism in place for informing staff of new policies and procedures, as evidenced by staff being knowledgeable and compliant with policies and procedures.
- Completes schedule accurately and timely. Coordinates with other directors to prevent "pockets of short staffing / excess staffing.
- Organizes new staff orientation with preceptor outlining for preceptor the goals and objectives.
- Coordinates patient activities. Maintains awareness of patient's condition through shift reports and unit rounds. Visits patients and evaluates care given.
- Makes rounds with physicians and assists as appropriate.
- Oversees and assures staff compliance with all quality programs.
- Monitors compliance with Restraint Management Program and restraint use each shift.
- Makes appropriate adjustment in staffing considering acuity, special needs of patients and qualifications and competency of staff.
- Confers with staff nurses to evaluate effectiveness of work distribution and quality of care. Ensures patients' initial assessments are completed by a Registered Nurse on a timely basis.
- Assures patients' pain levels are assessed per policy or more frequently as appropriate. Assures interventions are appropriately carried out.
- Routinely monitors staff compliance in scanning medication prior to administration.
- Monitors staff compliance in documentation START and STOP times. Assures that staff follow Telemetry protocol.
- Monitors medical record as validation of accurate and complete documentation, legibility, completeness and accuracy.
- Monitors observation charge capture and correct charge entries.
- Ensures assessments include consideration of age specific needs and biophysical, psychosocial, environmental, self care, educational and discharge planning factors.
- Demonstrates knowledge of emergency plans and functions effectively in an emergency. Demonstrates ability to participate in policy/procedure development, revision and use. Maintains and supports an environment conducive to provision of excellence in patient care. Makes inspection tours to assure compliance with established standards and procedures, safety,
- environmental and infection control, quality assurance, and other regulatory requirements. Takes corrective action and follows up.
- Identifies regulatory issues that would be considered high risk specific to their department and assures provision of any educational programs needed. Establishes how adherence will be measured. Evaluates staff performance in these areas.

- Current RN License to practice in NC

- Bachelors degree preferred
- Mastor's Degree in related field preferred
- Management Experience in Nursing
