Minimum Education
- Has completed a Master’s degree in Speech Language-Pathology
- Certification of Clinical Competence (CCC) granted by ASHA preferred
- Must possess current licensure or ability to obtain in the Commonwealth of Virginia
- Completes obligatory hospital in-services and continuing education for licensure
Required License Speech-language Pathologists
Required Skills:
- Strong clinical skills with ability to react decisively in emergency situations
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Familiarity with organization and functions of each hospital department
- Ability to problem-solve effectively and handle stress in a positive manner
- Maintain harmonious relationships with nursing personnel, medical staff, hospital administration, and all hospital departments
Essential Functions:
- Performs comprehensive patient evaluations and re-evaluations consistent with patient needs and capabilities
- Selects appropriate activities suited to patient’s physical, mental, social abilities and adapts program in response to patient and/ or family goals
- Provides quality in and outpatient Speech Language therapy treatments
- Educates and provides effective communication skills with patients, family members, and inter-dept. staff as needed
- Documents patient treatments daily, submits quarterly status reports, and completes D/C summaries
- Schedules patients, or assists secretary with, in relation to customer service policy
- Communicates with physicians on a regular basis concerning pt. treatments, response to care
- Performs MBSS and completes subsequent report PRN if treating in-patients
- Supervises students as needed
- Plans and initiates treatment programs in accordance with SLP’s scope of practice
- Demonstrates proper respect and attitude towards customers and co-workers.
- Displays courtesy, professionalism and sound communication skills.
- Maintains work area and equipment with appropriate infection prevention techniques
- Follows up with patients that no-show, or cancel appointments by phone, documents appropriately
- Attends monthly staff meetings, coordinates care planning as needed with other disciplines
- Assists teammates with patient care coverage when needed
Functional Demands:
- Sitting-for many periods of time throughout the day 15 minutes-1 hour at a time on various surfaces.
- Standing and walking often throughout the day depending on schedule in the office and hospital, climbing stairs not necessary, although may be done to reach various floors in the hospital
- Walking intermittently throughout the hospital and clinic on various surfaces
- Lifting – Regularly assist with lift and transfer of patients in the clinic or in hospital departments from stand-by to maximal assistance up to heavy weights
- Bending – Required often for patient care and departmental duties at levels from floor to overhead
- Reading and Writing – Regularly required to follow job description
- Exposure to infectious diseases – occasionally
- Exposure to hazardous waste – rarely

- Adheres to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and TJC standards and/or standards from other accrediting bodies
