A little bit about Flanks
Flanks was born as a portfolio data aggregator. We connect to any bank in the world and extract, enrich and standardize investment information for our customers. This enables our customers to have a holistic vision of their client's wealth. Our customers are robo-advisors (who consume our aggregated data via an API for their products) and more traditional players who prefer to consume our data via our apps or export capabilities.
We are pioneers in our market in Spain and are now rapidly expanding to other countries. We'll experience a lot of changes in the next few months: from the explosion of the amount of data we manage to the birth of new products on top of our platform. We will certainly grow a lot and it's our intention that you'll also grow (personally and professionally) with us.
We are a small team of about 15 people working from Barcelona. Although we work semi-remotely at the moment, we're planning for a remote-first approach for the immediate future. Our technical division is composed of two specialized teams: the Drivers Team and the Product Team. The former works to extract data from our sources and the latter presents it in multiple ways that add value to our customers.
About the role
You will be the first SysOps/SRE specialist in our company. However, we're not planning on simply dropping you all the responsibility for keeping our systems up and running. You'll be working as a full member of the Product Team, participating in the design, planning and execution of new features and the maintenance of the current ones. We'll ask you to have a special interest and impact in everything data and systems related, and help your peers to level up in the fields you have more experience with.Examples of tasks you can expect to work on are:
- Identify scalability and reliability problems in our current approaches and design plans to address them.
- Propose and execute changes to our CI/CD pipelines.
- Improve the observability of our systems and help us build the tools that will help us operate Flanks in the future.
- Understand our data ingestion patterns and proactively looking not only for improvements, but delivering migrations paths and strategies.
- Help us build meaningful monitoring and alerting systems.
- Code, review and ship new features, in the parts of the stack you are more confident with.
- Notably, the role's responsibilities don't include on-call duty for now. This might change in the future, but not without negotiation.As the team grows, we plan to split it and have people more focused on our systems and databases. You will have a big impact on how this process is conducted and it's final shape.
Things we'd love to see on you
- You are a nice person. Assholes and bigotry will not be tolerated.
- You have already a few years of experience in similar roles. We're looking for someone with some lessons already learned.
- You are a team player and a good communicator. You focus on communication over resolution.
- Meaningful experience designing, operating, and scaling MongoDB clusters. Experience modeling database schemas for high performance will be a huge plus.
- Working experience on the Kubernetes stack, bonus points if it's on top of GCP.
- Programming experience, preferably in Python.
- Practical experience in security.
- Working English and Spanish proficiency.
- In general, the more experience with parts of our stack, the better. However, we're looking for the fundamentals, so don't worry if you don't check all the boxes.
- The ability to drop by the office from time to time to say hi. Full remote is definitely an option, but we'd love to see you at least monthly and spend some time together.

We offer what we think is fair compensation (45K to 55K € per year for this role). We're on top of the market, but our intention is to increase compensation as the company grows. The hiring process
- You send us your resume, cover letter, etc.
- A chat with the tech load for the team, where we’ll dive deeper into your background, your possible fit, and where you’ll have the opportunity to ask any sort of questions.
- We will send you a few questions and give you some time to think about them. Then, we’ll schedule a chat to go through them and discuss possibilities, approaches and tradeoffs. There will be no whiteboard or tricky algorithm questions: just a chat to sample the breadth and depth of your knowledge.
