ON-DEMAND LINGUISTICS is a leading provider of professional interpretation and translation services across the United Kingdom. We are a network of certified professional interpreters, technology experts, and language specialists committed to delivering accurate, real-time communication for clients across a wide range of sectors. We believe that every voice deserves to be heard, and we are looking for talented, qualified freelance professionals to join our ever-growing team.

We are a Living Wage Employer and a Disability Confident Committed organisation. We are proud to foster an inclusive, respectful, and professional working environment for all members of our network.

Who We Are Looking For

We are seeking experienced and professionally qualified freelance interpreters and translators to support our clients at business meetings, medical consultations, legal proceedings, conferences, and virtual events. Assignments are available at any time and in any location across the UK, as well as remotely via our virtual platform.

Whether you specialise in spoken language interpretation, British Sign Language (BSL), or written translation, we welcome applications from dedicated professionals who share our commitment to accuracy, confidentiality, and excellence.

We are an equal opportunities organisation and actively encourage applications from individuals of all backgrounds, abilities, and identities.

Key Responsibilities

As a freelance interpreter or translator within the ON-DEMAND LINGUISTICS network, you will be expected to carry out your work to the highest professional standards. The nature of assignments will vary depending on your language pair(s), specialisms, and availability.

Interpretation Duties

  • Provide consecutive, simultaneous, or liaison interpretation for a variety of settings, including medical appointments, legal hearings, business meetings, and conferences.
  • Deliver accurate and impartial interpretation, maintaining the integrity of the original message at all times.
  • Attend in-person assignments across the UK or provide remote interpretation via telephone or video platforms as required.
  • Prepare thoroughly for specialist assignments by familiarising yourself with relevant terminology and subject matter in advance.

Translation Duties

  • Produce accurate written translations of documents, correspondence, reports, and other materials from the source language into the target language.
  • Ensure all translated content is culturally appropriate, grammatically correct, and faithful to the original text.
  • Meet agreed deadlines and maintain clear communication with the coordination team throughout each project.

Professional Standards

All members of our network are expected to uphold the following at all times:

  • Confidentiality – treat all client information with the utmost discretion.
  • Impartiality – remain neutral and professional in all assignments.
  • Accuracy – deliver precise and faithful interpretation or translation without omission or embellishment.
  • Punctuality – arrive on time or connect promptly for all scheduled assignments.
  • Professional conduct – represent ON-DEMAND LINGUISTICS with courtesy and professionalism in every interaction. Interpreters and translators are expected to adhere to the Code of Professional Conduct set out by their relevant professional body, such as the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL) or the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI).

Skills & Qualifications

We welcome applications from interpreters and translators who can demonstrate a strong combination of formal qualifications, professional experience, and personal attributes. All applicants must be able to evidence their competency and commitment to professional standards.

  • Fluency in English and at least one other language (spoken, written, or signed).
  • A recognised qualification in interpreting, translation, or linguistics (e.g. Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI), Community Interpreting qualification, degree in Translation or Linguistics, or equivalent).
  • Membership of, or eligibility to join, a relevant professional body such as NRPSI, CIOL, ITI, or ASLI.
  • Proven experience working in a professional interpreting or translation capacity.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • The ability to work independently, manage your own schedule, and meet deadlines reliably.

Desirable Requirements

  • Specialist knowledge or experience in one or more of the following areas: medical/healthcare, legal/court, social services, business, or conference interpreting.
  • Experience of remote interpreting via telephone or video conferencing platforms.
  • A valid Enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check, or willingness to obtain one.
  • Previous experience working within a freelance or self-employed capacity.
  • Must reside in the UK and be able to prove Right to Work in the UK

Personal Attributes

Beyond formal qualifications, we value individuals who demonstrate:

  • Professionalism and integrity in all aspects of their work.
  • Cultural sensitivity and awareness, with a genuine respect for diverse communities.
  • Reliability and flexibility, with the ability to respond to assignment requests at short notice.
  • Attention to detail, particularly in written translation work.
  • A genuine passion for facilitating communication and breaking down language barriers. We recognise that qualifications alone do not define an exceptional linguist. We are committed to assessing each applicant fairly and holistically.
