Hi, we’re Penfold

Penfold is building the pension of the future. We’re dragging the multi-trillion-pound pension industry out of the dark ages. Think about how challenger banks have changed banking. We’re demystifying pensions to make them universally accessible, engaging, and exciting so we can help everyone save enough for later life.

We have over £15 million in funding and are backed by some of the world’s most successful fintech investors & entrepreneurs.

We are an FCA-regulated pension provider, offering tens of thousands of consumers a totally digital pension experience via our mobile app, helping hundreds of businesses run their workplace pension, and tracking down hundreds of millions of pounds in lost pension pots for all our customers.

The role

We’re looking for a Platform Engineer to join our engineering team to help us build a highly scalable and fault-tolerant platform to support our rapidly growing customer base.

Here are some of the things you’ll help us with:

  • working with the team to understand any bottlenecks that are impacting our product delivery pipeline and working on solutions to resolve them
  • improving the overall developer experience so that the engineering team has the right tools for diagnosing issues in production
  • building meaningful alerting so that we’re aware of any platform issues before our customers are
  • identifying infrastructure performance issues and ensuring we’re able to scale up and down effectively to meet demand
  • automating as much of our delivery process as possible so we can focus on building great features for our customers

Skills and experience:

We use the following toolset:

  • AWS - specifically Lambda, ECS, RDS, SQS, ALB, Route53, S3, SNS, ECR, Secrets Manager
  • Docker
  • Vercel
  • Cypress
  • Sentry
  • GraphQL Apollo
  • Github Actions
  • Terraform

We’d love to hear from you if :

  • you have experience working with AWS
  • you have defined and provisioned infrastructure with Terraform in a production environment
  • you have experience with a programming language e.g Python, Ruby, Bash, Javascript
  • you have supported or helped to build an automated CI/CD pipeline
  • you are a confident and thoughtful communicator, both verbally and in written communication
  • you can write technical documentation (we use Notion and GitHub Wiki)

We’d especially love to hear from you if :

  • you are passionate about measuring things and understand the difference between monitoring and observability
  • you understand best practices for securing infrastructure and customer data in transit or at rest.
  • you have experiencing organising large and growing Terraform projects
  • you have experience deploying applications with AWS Lambda and ECS
  • you have used Github Actions to automate CI pipelines
  • you have exposure to the Javascript build tools e.g webpack, npm, yarn

Ultimately, we’re looking for smart, hardworking & energetic people who get stuff done & are committed to contributing to a great team. So, if you’re excited about what we’re doing, get in touch – definitely don’t be put off if you don’t tick every box!

Benefits

We’re working hard to create a working environment where people feel empowered to do their very best work, make a big impact, and enjoy what they do.

Right now we’re still a small team, but we’re well funded and growing rapidly. As one of our first 50 employees, you’ll not only have a huge say in defining our culture & what it’s like to work here, but you’ll have uncapped opportunities for progression, learning, and exposure to different areas of the business.

Specifically, our benefits package includes:

  • A competitive salary – we proactively review salaries to make sure you get what you deserve (i.e., we’ll review more than once a year)
  • Meaningful share options – you’ll own a part of Penfold and share in our success
  • Unlimited holidays with check-ins to make sure you’re taking enough – we’re interested in your output, not how many holidays you go on!
  • Flexible working – we hire competent and capable people, and we trust you to get the work done at a time that suits you
  • All the equipment you need to do your job whether you are working remotely or office-based.
  • Learning & Professional Development – we conduct regular 360 feedback and focus on role progression that suits each individual. We support everyone with courses, events, and coaching to help everyone reach their goals
  • Quarterly company socials (and regular meetups throughout the year too). If you’re based remotely we’ll cover transport and accommodation.

Location

Our engineering team operates as a remote-first team, with most team members opting to work from home. Our processes and tools are designed to include remote employees equally. We’ll make sure that you’re set up with the right equipment so you can work from home comfortably.

We have a private office in London at Uncommon Borough, a large co-working space with all the perks and more plants than a garden centre. It’s a great space if you want to come into the office and meet other team members.

We are happy to hear from candidates outside the UK based in either GMT or CET timezones.

Our application process

We’ll have a very quick introductory call to properly introduce you to Penfold, find out more about your experience so far and career aspirations, and make sure you get a chance to ask any questions you might have.

The next stage would be a technical exercise using Javascript which is done over a video call at a time that suits you and lasts for approximately 90 minutes. Finally, we’ll organize a session with a few of our engineers so that you get a chance to meet some of the team.

We are 100% committed to building a diverse and representative team. Whatever your race, religion, colour, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, or disability - we want to hear from you. If you have questions about the role or the company or the interview process, please let your recruiter know and we’re happy to answer these anonymously if that makes you feel more comfortable.
