Penfold is the challenger pension. We’re re-building the pension stack from scratch to drag a multi-trillion pound industry out of the dark ages. Our platform finally delivers a user-centric customer experience that helps everyone save for retirement, no matter their working circumstances.

We’re looking to take our product to the next level, scaling our existing pension business for the self-employed while launching Penfold for workplace to extending Penfold’s reach to the whole UK market.

Good design is a key strategic differentiator for our business and we’re looking for you to take a leading role in transforming Penfold into the market-leading pension app that really engages customers with saving for later life.

You will be the sole member of the design team (for now) and will work alongside product and engineering to help us grow from 10,000 customers to 50,000 over the next 12 months while rolling out Penfold for business.

As such, we imagine you are a natural leader and collaborator, an efficient, adaptable designer and someone who thrives in an autonomous environment. Your colleagues describe you as curious, motivated and humble.

Aside from owning the end to end design process, your role is to introduce processes and systems to create a home for design to thrive internally. You’ll create a design culture so that you can hire other designers—designers who consider joining in the future will be excited to see an environment where there is buy-in and support for design.

Next 6 months:

  • Own the end to end design process for our existing consumer application (iOS, Android + Web) and our new Penfold for Business product
  • Design beautiful & intuitive interfaces for our mobile and desktop applications
  • Work closely with our Lead Product Manager on research, ideation, prototyping and testing features that solve customer problems and drive growth for Penfold
  • Adapt and mature our design system and visual identity to enhance our brand
  • Be hands-on but in prime position to lead the design function as we scale
  • Ideally want to work on marketing creative too (with external support if needed)

About you:

  • Excel at creating user experiences that are beautifully intuitive and motivating. You think about the big picture, the brand, and most importantly, the user from concept to execution.
  • Love speaking to customers and solving their problems through design
  • Have plenty of design experience but still like getting your hands dirty
  • Experienced in designing fast-growth consumer applications (FinTech helpful!)
  • Have previously been embedded in cross-functional product delivery teams, working directly with product people and engineers to get your designs into code
  • Excited by the opportunity to grow into a leadership role as the company expands

What you’ll get in return:

We’re working hard to create a working environment where people feel empowered to do their very best work, make a significant impact, end enjoy what they do.

We’re a team of 15 growing to 20 in the next couple months. As an early employee, you’ll have a huge say in defining our culture and what it’s like to work here. You’ll also have uncapped opportunities for progression, learning and exposure to different areas of the business. :

  • A competitive salary. Reviewed regularly to make sure you’re always getting what you deserve.
  • Meaningful pre-Series A share options (you’ll own a part of Penfold and share in our success).
  • A massive 10% pension contribution that you don’t need to match (on top of your salary).
  • 33 days holiday per year (including 8 bank holidays) and the option to take more.
  • Free tea, coffee, soft drinks, beer and wine.
  • Free drinks every Thursday and lunch every Friday (when this is possible again!)
  • All the equipment you need to do your job (that you can take home with you).
  • The option to buy a bike tax-free, and spread the cost over several months (cycle to work scheme).
  • Udemy subscription for optional personal development (work or non-work related)
  • Annual company retreat somewhere great (when possible!)

Our Office

We mostly work from home at the moment but have a beautiful private office at Uncommon Borough, a large co-working space with all the good stuff (café, bike racks, showers, roof terrace, exercise classes, free drinks and more plants than a garden centre). Our policy during and after COVID will be fully optional between remote and office, and we will have semi-regular (e.g. monthly) get-togethers. We’ll get you all the kit you need for home working and stuff for the office too, so you can come in when you want to collaborate or socialise!

Logistics

We are 100% committed to building a diverse and representative team. Whatever your race, religion, colour, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, or disability - we want to hear from you.

Our interview process consists of 3 Zoom calls, two with a Co-Founder and one with our Lead PM. There might be a 4th call to wrap things up but we can move quickly!
