The Texas Cultural Trust, established in 1995, is a 501c(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is “to be the leading voice of the arts in education, advocacy, and economic impact in Texas, spotlighting the artistic excellence of our state.”
The Trust is governed by a 34-member Board of Directors comprised of industry and business leaders, arts patrons and artists from across the state who are passionate about the benefits of the arts to the state of Texas. With a $1.4 million operating budget and a staff of six, the organization has built a strong group of programs that promote and support the arts. These include the following:
- Art Can conducts research and publishes data quantifying the economic and educational impact of the arts in Texas.
- Texas Medal of Arts Awards, for which notable Texans across a broad spectrum of arts disciplines are honored at a biennial awards show and gala scheduled for February 21 & 22, 2023, will examine the “Power of the Arts amid Covid-19.”
- The Texas Young Masters program, jointly with the Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA), awards scholarship grants to deserving young artists in music, theatre, dance, visual arts, literary arts and other artistic disciplines.
- Texas Women for the Arts, with a mission to “awaken and nurture the artist in every Texas child,” is a statewide giving circle and membership program, with more than 240 members from across Texas. Since its inception, it has awarded over $3.4 million to organizations across the state, impacting more than three million Texas children.
- The Arts Access program examines the needs and opportunities to increase access to the arts, culture and arts education for all Texans by providing resources, programming and financial support, including the Trust’s Arts and Digital Literacy curriculum.
- Partners in the Arts is a growing consortium of arts organizations, artists and arts patrons across Texas. Formerly the Institutional Partners program, it has evolved into a broad membership platform for organizations and individuals.
Summary:
The Chief of Staff (COS) position will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). As COS, you will play a critical role in supporting the CEO on a range of areas, including the following: strategic initiatives and planning, special project management and execution, support of the Board of Directors, operational and administrative oversight, and management of workflow throughout the organization. Other key duties will include working closely with the external PR, digital and social media agencies to oversee and implement an effective communication strategy.
Responsibilities:
Leadership and Management
- Assist the CEO in managing workflow throughout the organization to ensure that top priorities receive an appropriate level of focus and subsequent implementation.
- Manage, inspire, motivate and challenge staff on a daily basis, ensuring the focus remains on the mission and that objectives are being met.
- Maintain continuous lines of communication, keeping the CEO informed on all critical and time-sensitive issues.
- Disseminate information and communicate directives on behalf of the CEO; respond to issues that arise, both internal and external; facilitate communication across all staff, Board and external vendors.
- Represent the CEO at internal and external meetings, as assigned; debrief the CEO and senior staff on meeting content, outcomes and action items as necessary.
- Work to solve problems, mediate disputes and deal with issues before they bubble up to the CEO.
- Ensure that the CEO is fully briefed and prepared for meetings and events.
- Monitor and advise on staff expansion, contraction or reassignment of responsibilities for maximum organizational benefit.
- Act on the authority of the CEO to oversee projects that typically require cross-functional collaboration and resource allocation. Provide project planning and management for programs, departmental projects and initiatives.
- Work closely with the Executive Assistant to ensure the appropriate management of the CEO’s calendar.
Strategy and Financial Performance
- Assist the CEO in developing the annual operating budget and measure progress against the strategic plan.
- Help the CEO identify priorities, strategically align his/her time with those concerns and revisit them regularly to assess progress.
- Work closely with the CEO on oversights of the approved budget, ensure maximum resource utilization and maintain the organization in a favorable financial position.
- Research and recommend new and revised strategies as needed.
Board of Directors Governance
- Act as the point person for the Board, providing material necessary for the Board to make informed decisions when required.
- Work with the Board to seek their involvement in fundraising activities and to amplify the organization’s mission.
- Assist in preparing the annual report for the Board.
Communications and Public Relations Oversight
- Draft, edit and summarize high-level correspondence and memoranda for the executive office; proofread and revise documents at the CEO requests.
- Conduct policy research specific to leadership priorities; draft op-ed letters and policy-related communications.
- Participate in the CEO’s internal and external communications, both written and spoken; draft and oversee external communications as necessary.
Requirements:
- A strong interest in the mission of Texas Cultural Trust.
- Strong background in communications / PR
- Six or more years in a similar role; experience working for a nonprofit and/or legislative branch of government is a plus.
- Three or more years’ experience in external communications/PR strategy development and execution.
- Transparent and high-integrity leadership.
- Experience and skill working with a Board of Directors.
- High-level strategic thinking and planning; ability to envision and convey the organization’s strategic future to the staff, board, volunteers and donors.
- Ability to effectively communicate the organization’s mission to donors, volunteers and the overall community.
- Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff.
- Previous success in establishing relationships with individuals and organizations of influence, including funders, partner agencies and volunteers.
- Solid organizational abilities, including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation.
- Strong financial management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making and reporting.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Strong work ethic with a high degree of energy.
