We are seeking a high-performing, safety-focused Ironworker (Generalist) to join our structural steel and reinforcing team. This role is built for a professional who holds or is looking to finish their requirements to achieve their Red Seal Endorsement (RSE).

Ironworkers are the architects of the skeleton of Canada’s infrastructure. As a Generalist, you are expected to be proficient across all major sectors of the trade—from structural steel and ornamental iron to reinforcing and machinery moving. Whether you are a certified Journeyperson or a senior apprentice in your final year, you will be expected to work to the Red Seal Occupational Standard (RSOS).

Core Responsibilities

In accordance with the national standards for the Ironworker (Generalist) trade, your primary duties include:

Structural Steel Erection: Unload, erect, and connect structural steel components for buildings, bridges, and other structures. Master the use of bolts, high-tension fasteners, and field welding.

Reinforcing (Rebar): Read and interpret placing drawings to layout and install reinforcing steel (rebar) and mesh in concrete forms. Perform manual and mechanical tying and utilize power benders.

Rigging & Hoisting: Plan and execute complex lifts. Select appropriate rigging gear (slings, shackles, spreader bars) and provide precise signals to crane operators in high-pressure environments.

Ornamental & Miscellaneous Iron: Install stairs, handrails, curtain walls, and window wall systems with a high degree of aesthetic precision.

Post-Tensioning: Install and stress tendons in post-tensioned concrete structures according to engineered specifications.

Field Fabrication & Welding: Perform SMAW (Stick) and FCAW (Flux-core) welding in all positions, as well as oxy-fuel cutting for on-site modifications.

Safety & Fall Protection: Maintain 100% tie-off compliance. Lead by example in high-elevation safety, including the use of perimeter cables, safety nets, and aerial work platforms.

Mentorship: If certified, provide technical instruction and sign off on the hours of junior apprentices. If finishing requirements, work with our Journeypersons to master Major Work Activities (MWAs) like multi-crane lifts and complex structural connections.

Qualifications & Requirements

Certification Status: Must be a Journeyperson or a Senior Apprentice currently looking to finish their requirements to achieve their Red Seal Endorsement (RSE).

Technical Proficiency: Expert knowledge of blueprints, weld symbols, and structural stability. CWB (Canadian Welding Bureau) certifications are a significant asset.

Physical Stamina: Exceptional physical strength and the ability to work at extreme heights and in all Canadian weather conditions.

Spatial Awareness: Ability to visualize complex 3D structures from 2D drawings and move heavy components with precision.

Safety Certifications: Valid Fall Protection, Rigging/Signaling, and Aerial Work Platform (AWP) certifications are mandatory.

The Red Seal Standard

The Ironworker (Generalist) Red Seal is a mark of a versatile, elite tradesperson. We support your career by providing:

The Path to Completion: For those finishing their RSE, we offer exposure to the full scope of the trade—from heavy structural lifts to intricate rebar cages—ensuring you are fully prepared for the Interprovincial Exam.

Competitive Compensation: Top-tier wages that reflect the high-risk and high-skill nature of the trade.

National Mobility: An RSE credential that is recognized across every province and territory, making you eligible for the biggest industrial and commercial projects in Canada.
