Job Posting: Ironworker - Structural/Ornamental (RSE Focused)

Location: [Insert Location, Canada]

Position Type: Full-Time, Permanent

Credentials: Holds or looking to finish their requirements to achieve their Red Seal Endorsement (RSE) Reporting To: Raising Gang Foreman / Ornamental Lead

The Opportunity

We are seeking a high-performing Ironworker (Structural/Ornamental) to join our elite steel erection team. This position is tailored for a professional who holds or is looking to finish their requirements to achieve their Red Seal Endorsement (RSE).

While the "Reinforcing" branch focuses on the internal muscle of concrete, this role is dedicated to the skeletal framework and the visible finishing of Canada’s most iconic structures. Whether you are a seasoned Journeyperson or a senior apprentice in your final year, you will be expected to work to the Red Seal Occupational Standard (RSOS), ensuring structural integrity and aesthetic perfection.

Core Responsibilities

In accordance with the national standards for the Ironworker (Structural/Ornamental) trade, your primary duties include:

Structural Steel Erection: Unload, hoist, and erect structural steel frames, girders, and columns. Perform "connecting" duties, involving the alignment of members and the installation of high-strength bolts (A325/A490).

Plumbing & Squaring: Use plumb bobs, lasers, and transit levels to ensure the structure is perfectly vertical and aligned before final bolting and welding.

Ornamental & Miscellaneous Work: Install architectural metalwork, including curtain walls, glass railings, ornamental stairs, catwalks, and finishing grilles. This requires a high degree of precision to avoid damaging finished surfaces.

Rigging & Hoisting: Plan and execute heavy lifts using cranes and derricks. Select appropriate slings, shackles, and spreader bars. Provide clear, standard hand or radio signals to operators.

Field Fabrication & Welding: Perform field welding (SMAW/FCAW) to secure joints and components. Execute oxy-fuel and plasma cutting for on-site modifications.

Building Envelope: Install metal decking and siding systems, ensuring proper fastening and weather-tight overlapping.

Safety & Fall Protection: Maintain 100% tie-off compliance while working at extreme heights. Lead by example in the use of perimeter cables, safety nets, and aerial work platforms.

Mentorship: If certified, supervise and sign off on the hours of junior apprentices. If finishing requirements, work with our Journeypersons to master Major Work Activities (MWAs) such as complex curtain wall systems and heavy structural connections.

Qualifications & Requirements

Certification Status: Must be a Journeyperson or a Senior Apprentice currently looking to finish their requirements to achieve their Red Seal Endorsement (RSE).

Technical Proficiency: Expert understanding of blueprints, erection drawings, and weld symbols. CWB (Canadian Welding Bureau) tickets are highly preferred.

Physical Stamina: Exceptional physical strength and the ability to work comfortably at extreme heights and in all Canadian weather conditions.

Spatial Awareness: Ability to visualize complex 3D structures and move heavy, awkward components with surgical precision.

Safety Certifications: Valid Fall Protection, Rigging/Signaling, and Aerial Work Platform (AWP) certifications are mandatory.

The Red Seal Standard

The Structural/Ornamental Red Seal is the mark of a master of the skyline. We support your career growth by providing:

The Path to Completion: For those finishing their RSE, we offer exposure to a diverse range of work—from heavy industrial steel to intricate architectural glass systems—to ensure you are prepared for the Interprovincial Exam.

Competitive Compensation: Top-tier wages that reflect the high-skill, high-risk nature of structural and ornamental work.

National Mobility: An RSE credential that is recognized across every province and territory, giving you access to the premier construction projects in Canada.
