JOB SUMMARY
The Volunteer Coordinator supports Autism Delaware’s mission by building and sustaining an inclusive, dynamic, and well-organized volunteer program. This role works across departments to ensure volunteers are effectively recruited, trained, supported, and appreciated. The Volunteer Coordinator plays a key role in expanding community engagement, developing relationships with corporate and individual volunteers, and helping advance strategic goals through impactful volunteer involvement.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
UNDERSTAND THE AGENCY’S MISSION & TREATMENT PHILOSOPHY
- Treat participants, families, and coworkers with dignity and respect.

ADVANCE THE MISSION AND STRATEGIC GOALS
- Collaborate with the Development team to assess and meet volunteer needs across events, programs, and initiatives.
- Manage volunteer engagement for major fundraising events, community activities, and third-party fundraisers.
- Develop and expand opportunities for volunteers to support Autism Delaware’s goals and services.
- Promote a culture of inclusion, gratitude, and professionalism among volunteers.
- Serve as the liaison between volunteers and staff, ensuring communication and expectations are clear and consistent.
VOLUNTEER PROGRAM OVERSIGHT
- Maintain and enhance use of POINT or similar volunteer management system.
- Create and update volunteer guidelines, documentation, and procedures to ensure consistency and compliance.
- Develop a recruitment plan to attract individual and group volunteers, including outreach to corporate and civic organizations.
- Establish and maintain volunteer job descriptions for recurring and event-based roles.
- Coordinate volunteer onboarding, orientation, and training.
RELATIONSHIP BUILDING AND STEWARDSHIP
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with volunteers, staff, and community partners.
- Develop and implement a year-round communication and stewardship plan.
- Create and manage a volunteer recognition program, including touchpoints throughout the year.
- Expand the “Community Ambassador Program” through training, support, and engagement at events.
COMMUNICATION AND REPORTING
- Provide timely and accurate reports on volunteer participation, hours, and engagement metrics.
- Work with Development and program teams to ensure volunteer needs are communicated effectively.
- Represent Autism Delaware in a professional manner at events, meetings, and community gatherings.
EVENT AND PROJECT SUPPORT
- Develop and share volunteer communications ahead of events, including job descriptions, logistics, and expectations.
- Attend and assist with events as needed, ensuring volunteers feel supported and valued.
- Respond to event-day needs, adjusting volunteer support plans when necessary.
INTERNAL COLLABORATION AND ORGANIZATIONAL SUPPORT
- Participate in team meetings and planning sessions.
- Assist with other Development and organizational tasks as assigned.
- Provide input and support on new volunteer initiatives or organizational changes.
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Part-time hourly position
- Standard schedule is Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.; some evenings and weekends required
- Requires light physical activity, including walking, lifting, and standing during events
- Regular in-state travel expected; access to a personal vehicle required
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
- Ability to lift/move supplies or event equipment up to 25 lbs.
- Ability to travel to community partner sites and event locations
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in business, education, communications, or related field preferred; or two+ years of experience in volunteer coordination or nonprofit work
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Excellent organizational, planning, and time management skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 and database systems; experience with volunteer management platforms preferred
- Comfortable working with diverse populations and interests
- Valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and favorable driving record
- Successful completion of background checks and drug screening
