Our commercial operations continue to expand, ensuring excellent service and social value contributions of over £30 million annually.
Bristol City Centre BID is a Business Improvement District that works with over 750 levy-paying businesses to enhance and improve Bristol's city centre. The BID focuses on creating a safer, cleaner, and more welcoming environment, supporting businesses through targeted initiatives. This role is a key part of the BID's street cleansing and maintenance efforts, ensuring that public spaces are well-maintained and attractive.
Purpose of the role:
We are looking for a dedicated and customer-focused Planter Maintenance Operative to support the BID's street cleansing team. This role specialises in maintaining and enhancing city centre planters, ensuring they remain vibrant, tidy, and well-cared for. The position will require strong attention to detail, physical stamina, and excellent customer service skills, as it involves engaging with local businesses and the public. This role will involve working alongside the BID’s gardeners who currently tend to the planters once a month adding new plants. All the planters are situated within Bristol city centre and within 10-minute cycle of the Lewins Mead depot.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain, water, and care for planters in the BID area to keep them in top condition.
- Remove litter, weeds, and debris from planting areas to ensure a clean and attractive city centre.
- Monitor plant health and report any issues such as vandalism or damage.
- Carry out minor maintenance jobs and improvements/repairs to the planters.
- Work closely with the BID street cleansing team to enhance the overall appearance of the city centre.
- Provide excellent customer service by engaging positively with businesses, answering questions, and offering support where required.
- Ensure all work is carried out in compliance with Bristol Waste Company (BWC) health & safety policies and procedures.
- Use and maintain equipment correctly, ensuring it remains safe and in good working order.
- Work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating initiative and a proactive approach.
- Provide feedback and improvement suggestions to enhance planter maintenance and city centre cleanliness.
- Look after and safely use the quadricycle and relevant equipment needed to complete the role.
Essential Requirements for the Role:
- Must be prepared to use electronic bike as part of the job remit.
- Strong customer service skills with the ability to interact positively with businesses and the public.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform physical tasks such as lifting, watering, and weeding.
- Good communication skills to liaise with colleagues, businesses, and the BID team effectively.
- Ability to work independently for the majority of the shift, using initiative, as well as collaboratively in a team setting.
- Awareness of health and safety procedures and a commitment to safe working practices.
- A positive, can-do attitude with a passion for keeping Bristol’s public spaces clean and attractive.
Desirable Requirements:
- An interest in gardening, landscaping, or grounds maintenance.
- Familiarity with the Bristol City Centre BID area and its priorities.
- Previous experience in a customer-facing role.
Full Job Description can be provided upon request.
Our Benefits:
- Annual leave package of 25 days plus 8 bank holidays.
- Employer contribution of 5% into the company pension scheme.
- Support for Mental Health, including a BUPA Employee Assistance Programme that provides support covering Mental Health, Financial and Family related topics. We also have Mental Health First Aiders across the business.
- Support for your Physical Health with our BUPA Health Cash Plan (we cover the cost of coverage for you), Cycle to Work scheme and an onsite Physiotherapist. All are free for our colleagues.
- Because we value our colleagues, we want to recruit more employees just like them, which is why we have our employee referral scheme.
- Dedicated learning and development team. We take pride in developing our colleagues and some examples of this include our In-House Driver Development Programme and internal promotions. Many of our Senior Leadership Team have developed from Operational roles, such as one of our Contract Managers who started as a Street Cleanser.
- Employee recognition ‘Stand Out Award’ and long service awards. To celebrate our colleagues wherever they are on their journey with us, we recognise and celebrate talent.
- We recognise that everyone is different and strive to create an environment that supports all colleagues through flexible working. We have introduced a hybrid working model where possible and actively encourage part-time working, job sharing and flexibility on hours.
