Purpose of the role:
To design, build and maintain robust financial models for the municipal waste service, supporting strategic decision making across the business. The role provides advanced analytical insight, translating complex data into clear, actionable information, and enabling high quality forecasting, scenario evaluation and commercial decision making.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop advanced driver based financial models for forecasting, scenario planning and strategic evaluation.
- Translate complex data into clear and meaningful insights for nontechnical stakeholders, highlighting key drivers, risks and recommendations.
- Ensure strong model governance including documentation, quality checks, audit trails and version control.
- Collaborate cross functionally with Finance, Data & Reporting, Operations and Bristol City Council to gather assumptions, validate inputs and align outputs with business needs.
- Monitor performance by reviewing actuals against forecasts, refining assumptions and updating models to reflect changing business conditions.
- Produce a range of modelling outputs including valuation models, sensitivity and scenario analyses, business cases, KPI dashboards and investment appraisals.
- Support decision making by providing high quality analytical insight that strengthens commercial understanding and enables strategic growth.
Essential Requirements for the Role:
Skills
- Advanced Excel capability, including complex formulas and data transformation tools.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate technical analysis in a clear, simple way for senior stakeholders.
- Structured approach to modelling and documentation.
Knowledge
- Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial modelling best practice.
- Knowledge of forecasting, scenario analysis, and investment appraisal methods.
- Familiarity with large datasets and analytical tools (e.g., Power BI, SQL).
Experience
- Proven experience designing financial models for forecasting, scenario analysis, or investment evaluation.
- Experience presenting insights and recommendations to nontechnical audiences.
- Experience implementing controls, documentation, and quality checks within modelling processes.
