Purpose of the role:
To ensure the safe, reliable, and legally compliant operation of Bristol Waste Company’s fleet and plant by delivering high-quality mobile maintenance and repairs. Operating across multiple sites, the Mobile HGV Technician plays a critical role in maintaining service continuity through proactive fault resolution, preventative maintenance, and responsive support. This role works closely with workshop teams and frontline operations to maximise fleet availability, minimise downtime, and uphold safety standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and repairs across all BWC sites, covering HGVs, LGVs, and plant equipment.
- Provide roadside repair services to minimise vehicle downtime and maintain service continuity.
- Respond to emergency call-outs, including support for emergency services when required.
- Attend all BWC operating centres, with daily AM and PM defect repair support at Avonmouth to ensure fleet readiness.
- Work flexibly across locations to meet operational needs and prioritise urgent repairs.
- Use diagnostic equipment and manual techniques to identify and resolve mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic faults.
- Accurately record fault codes, repair actions, and recurring issues to support continuous improvement.
- Read and interpret wiring diagrams and manufacturer repair instructions using digital and web-based tools.
- Ensure all work complies with manufacturer specifications and DVSA standards.
- Use diagnostic equipment and manual techniques to identify mechanical and electrical faults.
- Accurately record fault codes and repair actions.
- Maintain vehicles to meet MOT and roadworthiness standards.
- Adhere to health and safety regulations, including PPE use and safe working practices.
- Complete job cards, service sheets, and defect reports accurately and on time.
- Report recurring faults or safety concerns to supervisors.
- Maintain a clean and organised work area.
- Use tools and equipment responsibly and report defects or shortages.
- Work effectively with other technicians, workshop supervisors, and drivers.
- Support apprentices or trainee technicians with guidance and training.
- Vehicles to be moved and parked in a safe manner.
- Carry out quality control (QC) checks as required.
Essential Requirements and Qualifications for the Role:
Skills
- Mechanical Aptitude: Strong problem-solving skills and mechanical reasoning.
- IT Literacy: Ability to use vehicle diagnostic software and digital maintenance records.
- Communication: Clear communication with drivers, workshop supervisors, and other technicians.
- Time Management: Efficient in prioritising tasks and managing workload under pressure.
- Teamwork: Works well in a team environment, especially in larger fleet operations.
Qualifications
- NVQ Level 3 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (or equivalent).
- UK Driving License.
- HGV Licence (Class 1 or 2) – desirable for road testing vehicles and vehicle manoeuvring.
- IRTEC Accreditation – desirable.
Knowledge
- Vehicle Systems Expertise: Deep understanding of diesel engines, transmissions, braking systems (including air brakes), hydraulics, and electrical systems.
- Refuse and Recycling body repair familiarity (desirable).
- Diagnostics: Ability to use diagnostic tools and software to identify faults in electronic control systems.
- Regulatory Standards: Knowledge of DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) regulations, MOT requirements, and roadworthiness standards.
- Health & Safety: Familiarity with workshop safety protocols, COSHH regulations, and risk assessments.
Experience
- Hands-On Repairs: Proven experience in servicing, repairing, and maintaining HGVs, and associated equipment.
