Support may include reading comprehension, vocabulary development, writing mechanics and structure, academic discussion skills, and preparation for assessments, depending on student needs.

Tutoring should be responsive and skills-based, with clear routines, measurable skill goals, and a strong emphasis on building student confidence and consistent learning habits. The tutor will provide support across a typical 10-week cycle, with pacing adapted to student needs and site logistics.

What You Will Teach
Students will receive support in core English Language Arts skills, which may include phonics and foundational reading (primary grades), fluency and comprehension (elementary and middle grades), and analytical reading and writing (secondary grades). Tutoring may include support with essays, constructed responses, grammar, organization, revision strategies, and academic vocabulary, as well as study strategies for quizzes, assignments, and standardized assessments as applicable.

Major Topics Can Include

  • Foundational literacy skills (phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding—when applicable)
  • Reading fluency (accuracy, rate, expression)
  • Reading comprehension strategies (main idea, inference, text evidence, summarizing)
  • Vocabulary development (context clues, morphology, academic language)
  • Writing fundamentals (sentence structure, grammar, mechanics, conventions)
  • Paragraph structure and organization (topic sentences, transitions, cohesion)
  • Essay writing (claim/thesis, evidence, analysis, revision and editing)
  • Discussion and speaking/listening skills (academic conversation, citing evidence)
  • Test preparation skills (reading passages, constructed responses, time management)
  • Study habits and executive functioning supports (planning, checklist use, goal-setting)

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide small-group or 1:1 tutoring aligned to student needs and site expectations
  • Deliver structured sessions with clear skill objectives, modeling, guided practice, and independent practice
  • Use developmentally appropriate strategies and materials to support diverse learners
  • Track progress informally through skill checks, student work, and observation to guide instruction
  • Maintain a safe, inclusive, supportive environment that builds student confidence and motivation
  • Communicate professionally with site staff and Concorde program contacts regarding attendance and session completion tracking
  • Adapt instruction based on student performance and teacher/site feedback while maintaining intended outcomes

Qualifications (Required)

  • Minimum of 60 college credits (or Associate degree in progress/completed)
  • Strong competency in English Language Arts skills appropriate to the assigned grade band
  • Experience working with school-age students in structured settings (school, tutoring, after-school, camps, youth programs)
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to explain concepts clearly and patiently
  • Reliable, punctual, and professional; able to follow school policies and program boundaries
  • Comfort supporting learners with varied skill levels, including students who need remediation or structured supports
