Head of Rowing
Reports to: Boathouse Development Manager
Based: Barn Elms Boathouse
Salary: £34,000 - £37,000 FTE
Contract: 30 hours per week

Role Overview
Barn Elms boathouse is looking to take on an ambitious person to lead our coaching team as Head of Rowing. At Barn Elms we specialize in recreational rowing sessions for both adult and juniors, as well as running a competitive junior squad and working with local schools.
The role is 30 hours a week, with flexibility to working hours.
Applicants must have a sound knowledge of rowing and sculling with good communication skills.
Level 2 coaching & RYA powerboat qualifications are preferable, but not essential.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Day-to-day line management and development of the contracted coaches and casual rowing coaches, including:
- Line management and development of appropriately qualified coaches at Barn Elms Boathouse.
- Assist with recruitment
- Lead on the appropriate induction on both the facility and the Tideway rowing procedures and Responsible for organising staffing rotas for permanent and casual staff, ensuring that adequate numbers of staff are on site to enable the efficient running of the facility.
- Assist with monitoring the attendance and time keeping of staff, submitting weekly staff returns and preparing and authorising staff pay claims.
- Responsible for the supervision of casual coaches to ensure that a high quality of general coaching is maintained. Including responsibility for checking all relevant qualifications and documentation are within date.
- Responsible for organising programme rotas for permanent and casual coaches, ensuring that adequate numbers of coaches are on to complete a full programme.
- Assist with making sure that all staff are aware of site processes including NOPS, EAPs, First Aid and general health and safety procedures. Inc Risk assessments
Programme and Club Development:
- Work alongside lead junior coach and lead adult coach to develop and maintain a programme of scheduled sessions and courses showing a clear developmental progression for users, whilst giving a wide variation of offers for user groups of all abilities across the community.
- Report and monitor boathouse performance through usage figures and financial reports/ Responsible for collecting and monitoring use figures as required by the Barn Elms Area Manager.
- Coach a variety of indoor and river-based sessions including adult and junior beginners, recreational adults, school sessions and junior competitive squad.
- Setting up and managing club memberships
Health and Safety:
- Ensure club safety policies and code of conduct are reviewed and updated.
- Complete British Rowing safety audit.
- Keep up to date with all information announcements relayed from the PLA on Tideway safety daily.
- Ensure that the competency levels of recreational rowers are monitored and recorded before membership is granted.
- Ensuring that safeguarding practices are adhered to on site, or wherever the site is represented at events.
Other:
- Assist with water rescues and to maintain rescue boats and all other safety equipment. To ensure the safe handling of boats by all user groups.
- Work alongside Boathouse Development Manager on purchasing equipment and supplies.
- Responsible for the security of the Boathouse including opening and closing and being a registered key holder.
- Contribute to the development of Barn Elms Boathouse by means of a team work plan.
- Adhere to any daily operational schedules on site, contributing to the daily maintenance of the boathouse.
- Report building maintenance issues and repairs to the operations team.
- Work with suppliers for design and ordering of Barn Elms rowing kit and leisurewear.
- Manage boating of visiting crews for tideway races.
- Invoice facility users.
- Respond to day to day enquiries
- Produce the club newsletter.
General
- Work with your line manager to identify your own support needs and undertake continual personal and professional development.
- To carry out any other reasonable duties and responsibilities that contribute to the overall function of the team, appropriate with the grading of the post.

Person Specification
- An understanding and awareness health and safety implications of rowing and coaching on the tideway.
- Knowledge of rowing and sculling technique.
- Experience of managing a team of coaches.
- Experience of coaching young people of different ages and abilities to increase participation and develop pathways for talented athletes to flourish.
- Experience of coaching small groups through to larger numbers of varied ability
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to converse with key people (including colleagues, young people, other organisations and the general public) using a range of methods, including; oral, written, telephone and in meetings.
- Strong IT and web based skills, with experience of using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and any other relevant IT based programmes.
- Ability to work alone and effectively prioritise workload to meet the demands of the job in a timely manner.
- Be able to manage behaviour to ensure sessions are enjoyable and inclusive.
- A knowledge and understanding of safeguarding vulnerable adults and young people and its relevance to the role of a Rowing Coach, demonstrating integrity at all times and a willingness to attend training as required.
- Ability to effectively market and promote the sessions and facility to a wide range of customers
- Ability to contribute to the development of training programmes and sessions for groups and individuals.
- Holds a level 2 NGB qualification in rowing, or working towards.
- Hold a Level 2 RYA powerboat qualification (desired, not essential)
- Able to work unsociable hours including evenings and weekends as required.
- Holds a valid UK driving license and is able to commute to various race meets (Desired, not essential)
