Physical Activity Instructor
Reports to: Senior Health and Wellbeing Programme Lead
Based: Wandsworth
Salary: £31.52 per hour

Role Overview
This role will offer the opportunity to work as a personal trainer and class instructor across our Health and Wellbeing programmes. Depending on qualifications potential hours and variation of programmes will vary.
The Active Wellbeing Programme:
The Active Wellbeing programme is a specialist mental health exercise referral programme. This programme is designed to engage and promote health and wellbeing to people diagnosed with a severe mental illness (SMI). Minimum requirement of PT level 3.
Adult Weight management service:
Our Adult weight management service, includes Diabetes Prevention Decathlon, Adult Weight Management and Guys Get Active. All are free 10-12 week programmes, aimed to support the maintenance of healthy lifestyle changes including wellbeing information and physical activity. Each week will bring new experiences and exercises to support these changes as well as giving you the opportunity to be part of a wider support network of likeminded individuals, all looking for a change. Minimum PT level 2.
Macmillan Move More:
Macmillan Move More is a physical activity programme for service users living with or beyond a cancer diagnosis. The programme aims to support service users to stay active during or post cancer diagnosis and treatment. Minimum requirements PT level 3 and CanRehab level 4.
Active Lifestyles:
Active Lifestyles is a programme that offers adults within Wandsworth the chance to increase their physical activity levels. We run a number of weekly classes that include tai chi, Yoga, Pilates, over 50s keep fit classes, kickboxing, Zumba and walking sports.
Job Purpose
- The post-holder will be responsible for delivering at least one or more of the above programmes, dependant of qualifications and number of hours they can commit.
- The post-holder will be responsible any administrative tasks that are required for each of the individual programmes, which may include attending 1:1 assessments, taking registers and submitting attendance, supporting nutritionist workshops.
Responsibilities
- Record weekly attendance in accordance with the programme requirements
- Design and deliver weekly physical activity sessions for individual clients or groups.
- Monitor clients exercise intensity, type, and ability to ensure clients are exercising safely.
- Monitoring clients mental wellbeing during sessions to ensure safety and communicating any concerns to the line manager.
- High level of communication between instructor and line manager to report any concerns with a clients mental and physical wellbeing during sessions.
- Provide motivation and encouragement for clients to engage in sessions and stay engaged in their programme.
- Responsible for the setup of equipment for outdoor or online sessions.
- Responsible with checking in and out of sessions.
- Responsible for checking the safety of equipment. If equipment is faulty and needs to be replaced, responsible for communicating this with the Health and Wellbeing Lead.
- Responsible for administering first aid in the event of an accident and ensuring that safety requirements are met in all areas.
Person Specification
- Level 2 qualified personal training certification (essential) – Minimum for Active Lifestyles and Weight Management Service
- Level 3 qualified personal training certification (essential) – minimum for Active Wellbeing
- CanRehab Level 4 qualified certification (essential) – minimum for Macmillan Move More
- Experience in a role that involves delivering face-to-face personal training physical activity support
- Experiencing working in a range of health programmes including within a mental health, weight management and cancer rehab setting. Experience for eligibility to work on each programme will differ (desirable)
- Experience working with vulnerable groups (desirable)
- First aid, Mental health first aid, suicide prevention or mental health awareness qualification (desirable) or willingness to undertake training (essential)
- Understanding of the principles of confidentiality and how these apply when handling service-user information.
- Understanding of the challenge’s vulnerable adults faced with or diagnosed with health related issues and accessing independent activity or health programmes
- Good ability to use Microsoft Office and Outlook email
- Ability to work with vulnerable adults with a wide range of social, health and wellbeing needs, inspiring trust and confidence, motivating others to reach their potential.
- Excellent organisation, planning and time management skills.
- Excellent communication skills, verbal and written; able to communicate with a range of stakeholders in a meaningful way.
- Able to work unsupervised to agreed outcomes, meeting deadlines and within a targeted work environment.
