Physical Activity Specialist

 

Reports to: Health and Wellbeing Programme Leads

Based: Richmond

Salary: £12,914, (FTE: £25,828)

Contract: Part Time, Fixed Term (20 Hours per week, 1-year contract)

Role Overview

 

This role will work as a personal trainer and class instructor across three of our health and wellbeing programmes in Richmond.  

 

The Active Wellbeing Programme:  

 

The Active Wellbeing programme is a specialist mental health exercise referral programme. This programme is designed to engage and promote health and wellbeing to people diagnosed with a severe mental illness (SMI). The role will be working across the Richmond Borough.  

 

Diabetes Decathlon:  

 

The Diabetes Prevention Decathlon is a free 10-week programme, aimed to support the maintenance of healthy lifestyle changes including wellbeing information and physical activity. Each week will bring new experiences and exercises to support these changes as well as giving you the opportunity to be part of a wider support network of like-minded individuals, all looking for a change. 

 

Weight Management Programme: 

 

This programme aims to help maintain sustained weight loss through a 12-week programme providing information, skills, resources and access to exercise to support weight loss. 

 

Job Purpose

 

  • Working as part of Enables Health and Wellbeing team to deliver a high standard of physical activity sessions and classes to service users with long-term health conditions across the Richmond Borough. 
  • Ensures that the service is provided to the standards required by the organisation, Government Legislation and governing body rulings. 
  • Deliver a one-hour exercise session each week over a duration of 10 sessions per assigned programme client.  
  • Actively involved in programme assessments either side of the 10 session programme.  
  • Deliver an individualised physical activity programme to each client assigned.  

Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver a weekly physical activity session for each client considering safety and progression with each of the 10 sessions. 
  • Responsible for delivering a 10 week, 1:1 personal training programme to clients with severe mental health illnesses (SMI) which can include: Bipolar, Schizophrenia, Severe Clinical Depression. 
  • The post-holder will be responsible for attending initial and final assessment meetings either side of the 10 week programme for each client assigned to them as part of the Active Wellbeing programme Monitor clients exercise intensity, type, and ability to ensure clients are exercising safely.  
  • Monitoring client's mental wellbeing during sessions to ensure safety and communicating any concerns to the line manager.  
  • Responsible for arranging weekly sessions with clients.  
  • High level of communication between instructor and client to confirm session times and locations.  
  • High level of communication between instructor and line manager to report any concerns with a clients mental and physical wellbeing during sessions.  
  • Provide motivation and encouragement for clients to engage in sessions and stay engaged in their programme. 
  • Responsible for the setup of equipment for outdoor or online sessions.  
  • Responsible with checking in and out of sessions with the admin team to ensure safety of both instructor and client. 
  • Responsible for checking the safety of equipment. If equipment is faulty and needs to be replaced, responsible for communicating this with the Active Wellbeing programme coordinator. 
  • Responsible for administering first aid in the event of an accident and ensuring that safety requirements are met in all areas. 
  • Responsible for travelling across the Richmond borough to assigned sessions and assessments either through public transport, cycling or own vehicle.

Diabetes Prevention Decathlon and Adult Weight Management (Class based):  

Main Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Deliver a weekly physical activity session as part of the DPD and AWM programmes. 
  • Monitor participants exercise intensity, type, and ability to ensure participants are exercising safely.  
  • Responsible for attending assigned classes, taking registers and supporting the programme staff in delivery. 
  • High level of communication between physical activity specialist and programme teams.   
  • Responsible for the setup of equipment used during classes. 
  • Responsible for supporting facilitator in set up of the space and support in the delivery of education for the appropriate programme 
  • Responsible for checking the safety of equipment. If equipment is faulty and needs to be replaced, responsible for communicating this with the Active Wellbeing programme coordinator. 
  • Responsible for administering first aid in the event of an accident and ensuring that safety requirements are met in all areas.
  • Responsible for travelling across the Richmond borough to assigned classes either through public transport, cycling or own vehicle (expenses to be explained at further point in application process) 

Job Dimensions 

  • Ensures that the service is provided to the standards required by the organisation, Government Legislation and governing body rulings. 
  • Deliver exercise classes and assisting lead educator in one hour classes across programmes within DPD and AWM
