Head of Engineering (Track for Future VP Eng/CTO)

Location: Belgrade (up to 3 days per week in the office)

Full-time | SaaS | B2B | Medical Education | AI-powered

Who We Are

Evermed is a fast-growing B2B SaaS company serving medical associations worldwide with a Netflix-style video education platform and a full engagement engine behind it.

Our mission is to help doctors stay up-to-date and elevate patient care through world-class, personalized educational content.

We’ve reached product-market fit and are scaling with long-term medical association clients, with a need to evolve our product and strengthen platform reliability, velocity, and operational maturity.

The Opportunity

We’re looking for a Head of Engineering (with potential to grow into CTO) to lead our next phase of growth. You’ll be the most senior technical person in the company — working directly with the founders (COO and CEO) to stabilize our platform, evolve engineering culture, and scale with confidence.

This is not a maintenance role. This is a builder’s role — an opportunity to shape the technical future of the company, drive clear accountability, and establish an execution rhythm that supports healthy, sustained growth.

If you’re the kind of person who:

  • Has technical depth, but thrives on leading others more than writing code yourself
  • Has led engineering teams through scale-up transitions and platform hardening
  • Loves to bring clarity, structure, and follow-through to fast-evolving teams
  • Is an excellent, clear communicator who can translate business needs into engineering priorities, and surface technical constraints in plain language
  • Is easy to work with, distills signal from noise, frames trade-offs thoughtfully, and gets to the core of things quickly
  • Is a systems thinker who connects business goals to architecture, and builds cultures of accountability and KPI-driven execution
  • Can challenge founders respectfully and work with them side-by-side to move the company forward
  • Believes AI is here to amplify human creativity, not replace it, and wants to use it wisely across internal workflows and product delivery

…then this might be your “hell yes” moment.

If you’re someone who avoids tough conversations, clings to perfect solutions, resists writing things down, or needs weeks to make a call - this likely won’t be a fit.

We move with a sense of urgency, document decisions for clarity and scale, and believe great engineering is elegant, practical, and accountable. We’re not building a cathedral - we’re building something resilient, scalable, and client-ready.

What You’ll Own (Key Outcomes)

A. Platform Stability and Scalability

  • Own platform stability, incident response, and rollback readiness — ensuring production remains reliable and predictable as we grow
  • Strengthen per-tenant scalability through smart use of Dockerized workloads, Redis caching, and service-level observability
  • Partner with DevOps to prioritize and pay down critical tech debt, while driving architecture decisions that support long-term scale

B. Product Velocity and Technical Agility

  • Own and continuously improve our software development lifecycle - from backlog grooming to CI/CD - ensuring features ship with clarity, consistency, and speed
  • Establish a clear delivery rhythm using JIRA and measurable KPIs that give visibility into velocity, cycle time, and quality without creating burnout
  • Drive a user-focused, data-informed engineering culture - one that prioritizes solving real user problems and removes delivery blockers at their root

C. Engineering Culture and Leadership

  • Model a culture of clarity, accountability, and ownership across the engineering team
  • Lead by example and through systems, not pressure or micromanagement
  • Normalize writing as a core part of engineering culture - not for bureaucracy, but as a way to think, make decisions visible, and scale clarity across the team
  • Normalize clear, specific, contextual, complete communication (no vagueness, no guessing)
  • Instill cross-functional transparency and reduce siloing between engineering, product, and leadership (no “us vs them” for business and engineering)

D. KPI-Driven Execution

  • Build a system of visibility and accountability using KPIs that matter - delivery velocity, cycle time, error rate, uptime, test coverage, and bug resolution
  • Connect engineering work to company-level goals and client-facing outcomes — like minutes watched, platform uptime, revenue per client, and user NPS
  • Use data to drive sprint focus, inform retrospectives, and prioritize roadmap decisions — not just to measure performance, but to improve how we work

E. AI and Automation Enablement

  • Identify high-leverage use cases for AI/LLMs across product features and engineering workflows
  • Champion experimentation with clear, measurable hypotheses (not hype), aimed at improving velocity, reducing repetitive work, and scaling customer impact
  • Treat AI as a multiplier (“human + machine > human alone”) - using it where it adds clarity, speed, or leverage, always in service of human-centered outcomes.

Must-Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field
  • 7+ years in software engineering, including at least one role as the most senior technical leader in a high-growth SaaS company
  • English language fluency: You are comfortable joining calls with clients where needed.
  • Experience owning platform stability, architecture, and velocity simultaneously - not just code delivery. You’ve made the hard decisions. You know how to trade off between perfect and good enough.
  • Proven ability to lead engineering teams through ambiguity: resetting structure, installing execution systems, and shipping under evolving requirements
  • Strong command of engineering KPIs - delivery velocity, deployment frequency, test coverage, incident response, and more
  • Clear, confident communicator across functions - able to make trade-offs visible, decisions under pressure, and updates trustworthy
  • Ownership mindset with a bias toward action, outcomes, and closing loops
  • Hands-on experience with modern stacks: CI/CD, Docker, Redis, MySQL, cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred)
  • Comfortable working with non-technical founders and cross-functional leads
  • You think in systems, lead with integrity, and believe execution is the highest form of alignment
  • Familiarity with or openness to learning our current stack: Angular (frontend), PHP/Symfony (backend), Dockerized workloads, Redis, MySQL, and AWS
  • Strong DevOps awareness - comfortable leading in an environment with per-tenant infrastructure, CI/CD, observability, and platform performance responsibilities
  • Healthy curiosity toward AI, automation, and performance engineering

Bonus Experience (Nice to Have)

  • Experience stabilizing and scaling a SaaS platform post-product-market-fit
  • Familiarity with educational platforms, content personalization, or video-based learning delivery
  • Exposure to multi-tenant SaaS environments, feature flag systems, or customer-specific configuration models

Our Current Tech Stack

Our platform runs on a hybrid multi-tenant architecture with per-tenant databases and shared infrastructure and code. We operate in a DevOps-intensive environment where engineering teams own delivery, observability, and production readiness.

  • Frontend: Angular + TypeScript
  • Backend: PHP (Symfony), EasyAdmin for admin tooling, TypeScript for microservices
  • Architecture: Hybrid multi-tenant with per-tenant databases and shared infrastructure
  • Infrastructure: AWS (EC2, RDS, S3), Docker, TeamCity CI/CD
  • Data: MySQL (per tenant), Redis (caching, sessions), S3 (media storage)
  • Tooling & Process: JIRA, Bitbucket, Confluence, custom Control Tower for tenant config, feature flags, and internal visibility

Our Culture and Your Fit

We value clarity, speed, and ownership.

We’re a small team doing big things. There’s no politics, no silos, and no place to hide — only clear goals, open feedback, and a shared commitment to building something that lasts.

You’ll work directly with the founders who are both non-technical but deeply engaged in product, growth, and client success.

We’re not looking for someone who just wants to manage people. We’re looking for someone who wants to lead them — by example, through systems, and toward shared success.

Someone who brings structure without ego, clarity without chaos, and calm energy that makes the team better with every interaction.
