Space Machines Company (SMC) is an Australian start-up developing in-space logistics and transportation capabilities to cost-effectively insert small satellites into desired low earth orbits (LEO), geostationary earth orbits (GEO) and lunar orbits. SMC vehicles will grow in future to maintain, refuel, repair and decommission satellites and other spacecraft.

 

 

THE ROLE

 

Space Machines Company is looking for an experienced Lead Attitude and Orbit Control System (AOCS) Engineer to join our team in Sydney.  We have a number of projects in development that require expert input to deliver. 

 

What the role will include:

  • Leadership, guidance and mentoring of fellow software engineers
  • design, testing and verification of robust AOCS subsystems from requirements
  • robust analysis of requirements and implementation of AOCS algorithms:
    • QuEst
    • TRIAD
    • Kalman filter variations
  • familiarity with typical AOCS sensor suites
    • star trackers
    • sun sensors
    • IMU (accelerometers, gyroscopes) plus magnetometers
    • GNSS
  • familiarity with typical AOCS actuators
    • magnetorquers
    • reaction wheels
    • reaction thrusters
  • simulation of spacecraft dynamics and control interactions
  • market survey, analysis, selection and procurement of sensors and actuators

 

PROFILE

 

We are looking for a candidate with the following skillsets: 

  • a degree in Aerospace, Electronic or Mechatronic  Engineering or a related field
  • at least 3 years experience working in AOCS roles
  • at least 1 years experience leading AOCS efforts
  • proficiency in Matlab and/or C
  • a strong understanding of vehicle control and automation
  • familiarity with FDIR analysis and planning
  • an ability to understand the interaction between the AOCS technologies and spacecraft performance
  • the ability to work closely with flight software and systems engineers
  • the ability to clearly communicate at an appropriate level with non-technical personnel

 

You will need the ability to work in a start-up environment and grow with us as our capabilities expand. Communication and stakeholder management skills will be key to the success of this role, and we expect you to be a pro-active, creative, enthusiastic and results oriented. 

 

Some interstate and international travel may be required for the role. The ability to obtain an Australian Defence security clearance will be a benefit, but not essential.
