Space Machines Company (SMC) is an Australian start-up developing in-space logistics and transportation capabilities to cost-effectively insert small satellites into desired low earth orbits (LEO), geostationary earth orbits (GEO) and lunar orbits. SMC vehicles will grow in future to maintain, refuel, repair and decommission satellites and other spacecraft.

 

THE ROLE

 

In this Sydney based position, you will lead our team for the Assembly, Integration, and Testing (AIT) activities within the framework of spacecraft engineering for our various missions.  This includes:

  • Leading the AIT team, and working closely with Mission Management and the entire engineering team to achieve a well tested spacecraft
  • Implementing elements of NASA and/or ECSS standards to test and qualify spacecraft and associated sub-systems;
  • Detailed project work in planning, executing and reporting of tests, qualification, verification, calibration activities and operation of space hardware;
  • Working with the Systems Engineering team to propose the testing and verification program for spacecraft missions, including engaging with customer discussions on payload testing and verification;
  • Technical steering of multi-disciplinary design team (internal/external) to work according to specification, planning and cost;
  • Primary and secondary, static and dynamic, structural analysis (random vibration, shock, explicit analysis, coupled loads) for spacecraft metallic and composite structures;
  • Involvement in the functional, performance and environmental testing campaigns, as well as the assembly and integration both from a hardware and software perspective
  • Experience in Mechanical CAD and analysis would be seen as beneficial to the role, together with experience in electronics or software. 

 

PROFILE

 

We expect you to have a degree in a relevant engineering field (Aerospace, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronics Engineering with at least 5+ years of relevant experience in the space industry.  Spacecraft mission design, qualification and operations experience are highly desirable. A good and practical knowledge of the development flow and the interaction with the other disciplines is a strong advantage.  We expect you to be a pro-active, creative, enthusiastic and results oriented, with a broad view on other spacecraft subsystems.  

 

You will need the ability to work in a start-up environment and grow with us as our capabilities expand. Communication and stakeholder management skills will be key to the success of this role, and we expect you to be a pro-active, creative, enthusiastic and results oriented. You will have the ability to lead a small team, and motivate them to deliver against engineering needs. 

 

Some interstate and international travel may be required for the role. The ability to obtain an Australian Defence security clearance will be a benefit, but not essential.
